Renal Support Clinic for Dogs and Cats
We understand how important your pet’s health and well-being are to you. Renal disease (also known as kidney disease), is a common condition in both dogs and cats, and it’s one that requires careful monitoring and management. This progressive disease can affect your pet’s quality of life, but with the right interventions and close monitoring, we can work together to slow down it’s progression and ensure your pet has a with a comfortable, happy life.
What is Renal Disease?
Renal disease refers to damage or dysfunction of the kidneys, which play a critical role in filtering waste products, balancing fluids, and maintaining overall health. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for renal disease and kidney function deteriorates gradually over time. However, with the right care and veterinary interventions we can slow its progression and improve your pet’s quality of life. In the early stages, symptoms may be mild and go unnoticed, but as the disease progresses, more noticeable signs such as increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and reduced appetite.
Our Approach to Renal Care
We offer a comprehensive monitoring program tailored to your pets individual needs. The clinic is managed by one of our Qualified Veterinary Nurses, who will closely monitor your pet’s condition and provide personalised treatment to help slow the progression of kidney disease.
If your pet has been diagnosed with Kidney Failure by one of our vets, you will be offered the opportunity to participate in our renal support clinics.
The first Renal Support Clinic Includes:
- Complete Health Examination: Your pet will have a clinical examination from nose to tail as part of the clinic.
- Blood Pressure Monitoring (if required): High blood pressure is common in pets with renal disease which can contribute to worsening your pets kidney function. We will take your pets blood pressure in a calm and relaxed environment to ensure we have accurate readings.
- Body Condition and Muscle Condition Scoring: We will assess your pet’s body condition (weight and fat distribution) and muscle condition to ensure they are maintaining a healthy weight and muscle mass, which are important factors in managing kidney disease.
- Dietary Advice: Your pet may require a special renal diet, which can help reduce kidney stress and improve overall health. We will discuss the types of food and feeding strategies that are most beneficial for your pet as part of their treatment plan.
- Increasing Water Intake: Pets with renal disease often struggle with hydration. We will offer advice on ways to encourage your pet to drink more water, which is vital for kidney function and overall health.
This appointment will last 30 minutes and is your opportunity to ask all the questions you need and the aim is to set you and your pet up for success in managing their renal disease. Don’t forget as well that you also have unlimited Whatsapp support from our team.

Subsequent Renal Clinics
One of the most important things we can do for our pets with renal disease is monitor them regularly. This means we know how quickly their disease is progressing and we can put in extra support and make changes as and when they are needed.
The frequency of monitoring will depend on your pet and their needs, which is why, unlike many of our clinics, our Renal Support Clinics are organised individually, so we can tailor them specially to your pet. Generally we will advise starting with a clinic every 3 months and then once we are confident we have control of the problem, every 6 months is usually sufficient.
However, all Renal Clinics will include a urine test, a blood test and a blood pressure check, as all three are important parts of the monitoring of the condition.
Subsequent Renal Clinics include;
- Complete Health Examination: Your pet will have a clinical examination from nose to tail as part of the clinic.
- Body Condition and Muscle Condition Scoring: We will assess your pet’s body condition (weight and fat distribution) and muscle condition to ensure they are maintaining a healthy weight and muscle mass, which are important factors in managing kidney disease.
- Dietary, water intake and lifestyle support and advice
- Blood Pressure Monitoring; High blood pressure is common in pets with renal disease which can contribute to worsening your pets kidney function. We will take your pets blood pressure in a calm and relaxed environment to ensure we have accurate readings.
- Blood Tests: Blood tests will evaluate kidney function, check for any underlying issues, and monitor changes over time. These tests help us track the progression of the disease and adjust treatment as needed.
- Urinalysis: A urine sample gives us a good indicator of how the kidneys are functioning and we will advise on how to obtain this.
Sometimes the results of these tests and examinations mean our team will advise further treatment or testing. The costs of these will be discussed with you at the time.
